Abbotsford Community Foundation Receives 2019 Community Matters Award

The Abbotsford Community Foundation has been selected as the 2019 recipient for the Abbotsford Board of Education’s annual Community Matters Award. The Abbotsford Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy and develop partnerships by investing in people, projects, and programs to strengthen our community.

“Community involvement in the Abbotsford School District has been a long and valued tradition,” says Stan Petersen, Chair for the Abbotsford Board of Education. “Numerous organizations, such as this year’s recipient, contribute resources and countless hours of service to enable our students to achieve success. Our Community Matters Award is a way for the Board of Education to more formally express its appreciation and acknowledge the support of organizations like the Abbotsford Community Foundation.”

A key highlight of the nomination was recognizing the Foundation’s Student Awards Program. The purpose of the Abbotsford Community Foundation Student Awards Program is to increase access to post-secondary education by granting scholarships, bursaries and other awards to students graduating from participating public and private secondary schools in the City of Abbotsford. The Foundation provides approximately 300 awards each year funded by the income from student award endowment funds and support from annual student award donors.

In his nomination for the organization, John Morrow noted, “Since 1995 the Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) has provided over 5,000 Abbotsford School District students with over $5,000,000 in scholarships and bursaries. The ACF facilitates donors who can be individuals or businesses to set up permanent and/or annual student awards and has been doing this for over two decades! Donors are able to read over applications from students and decide on the recipient of their award, as well as attend the convocation to present the award to the chosen student. This program has had a significant impact in our community, Abbotsford School District students and the community members who fund these awards.”

A total of 12 nominations were received for the 2019 Community Matters Award. The Board established the annual award in 2015 to formally recognize community partners who have made a significant contribution to the lives of students in the Abbotsford School District.
