Board passes $225M budget for 2019-2020 school year

A $225 million budget for the 2019-2020 year has been passed by the Abbotsford Board of Education, as the district prepares to enter another school year this September. The school district is expecting a projected enrolment increase of approximately 92 students in the coming year.

 The 2019-20 Budget was developed within the context of the Board’s Strategic Plan, providing allocated support for the programs and services currently in place and related to student success, building a progressive workforce, optimizing resources and providing engaging opportunities for parents and stakeholders.

“Our strategic goals serve as a guiding point for the initiatives and projects we will take on in the coming year to provide new and exciting opportunities for our students and staff,” said Stan Petersen, Chair for the Abbotsford Board of Education. “The Board’s approach to sound fiscal management has positioned us to do our best to meet any unknown challenges that we may face in the future.”

A few key budget highlights for 2019-2020 include:

  • A $0.90 million transfer to capital to cover the Board’s required contribution to the new Eagle Mountain elementary school project that was approved by the Ministry of Education in the spring of 2019;
  • A 1.75% salary increase for all teachers and support staff;
  • New full-time teaching positions added through the Classroom Enhancement Fund; and
  • New support staff and exempt positions added to the educational assistant portfolio, IT department, HR department, Finance department and International Education department.

The final 2019-2020 Budget was approved and adopted by the Board of Education at the June 18th Board meeting.
