Over 1,600 students take part in Summer School

The Abbotsford School District saw more than 1,600 students in virtual and physically distanced classrooms throughout July, taking part in Elementary Enhancement Summer School (Grades 1-8), Academic Secondary Summer School (Grades 9-12) and online offerings through Abbotsford Virtual School. More than 40 full-credit courses and remedial courses were completed. Full credit courses are offered to students who have not taken the course before, while remedial courses are for students who have taken the course already but want to increase their knowledge or improve their mark.

The district's Elementary Enhancement Summer School, for students in Grades 1-8, had over 500 students participate this summer. Teachers and school personnel recommend students in this program, with classes taking place at Centennial Elementary, Terry Fox Elementary and Abbotsford Middle School.

The district's Academic Summer School, for students in Grades 9-12, had over 300 students learning at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Teachers taught through the lens of inquiry and students in this program enrolled in these courses for various reasons, including:

  • to earn advanced credit;
  • to meet post-secondary admission/entrance requirements;
  • to meet Ministry of Education graduation requirements; and
  • to improve the mark in a course already completed.

Over 800 students registered for our summer school offerings and took courses via the Abbotsford Virtual School.

A full report on the progress of Summer School in the district will be submitted to the Board of Education in the coming six months.
